It was early 2009, and a nominee for Treasury Secretary was announced, Timothy Geithner. In just minutes it was revealed he had failed to pay his taxes and a very lame excuse was offered. Yet, in a move that hit my ludicrous button, he was given the position.
And I watched as many other personal indiscretions, and outright thievery from the public, were overlooked, and wondered, how do we know who to trust anymore, when it seems not many "Play By The Rules". And I began writing the song. It is mainly a song about American values. Values that seem to be eroding in the lives and conduct of those people we are supposed to look up to and respect. I started creating verses that touched on responsibility, accountability, integrity, the dumbing down of our educational system, the rewriting of history, the lifetime jobs created for public servants, the wanton and reckless spending of taxpayer's money. And in the end, I offer my Ten Demandments, a course of action for a better America. The song was recorded at Trax Studios in Nashville, and when I brought it back to Cleveland to show my friends at Commercial Recording Studios, they saw a video. And thus, I became Uncle Sam and we created, and posted on You Tube, Play By The Rules.
Many thousands of views later, I entered it in the Hollywood Music and Media Awards, and, much to my surprise, won Best Country Song. And as life goes on, and our country drifts aimlessly, I'm still, "trying very hard to chill and keep my cool. I'm trying hard to find someone, who'll just play by the rules. Is there anybody out there, who'll just play by the rules".
